The Movement & Psychology workshop is a practical exploration of the natural ecology of movement. In this Substack, I want to give you an impression of the theory behind the workshop, and what we’ll be doing inside of it.
The term ecology refers to the interconnected web of relationships that constitutes a natural system. We all have the intuition that introducing a new species of plant or animal into an environment may change the dynamics of that system in unpredictable ways.
Movement also has an ecology. In wild animals, movement is goal-directed, emotionally motivated, reflex coordinated and absolutely present. This is the natural ecology of movement, to which humans have introduced a new and sometimes destructive species: abstract thought.
